As the employer or as an executive, you must be more than willing to listen and weigh in their suggestions that might lead to drastic but good changes in the company. Formal knowledge is transmitted, but because of the social nature of the learning, much knowledge transfer is informal, leading to the acquisition of both explicit and tacit knowledge. This group typically takes on leadership roles in guiding the group 2 The active group who attend and participate regularly, but not to the level of the leaders. Communities of practice have different relationships with the official organization. Adapting modern medical education based on the theory of communities of practice will not necessarily result in radical curricular change. Patients' audits demonstrated more relationship-centred approach to care-provision; improved recording of patient and family feelings and expectations; assessment of individual needs; risk-screening; and greater involvement of the patient in decision-making. Furthermore, a community of practice is different from an informal network. The World Bank also formally recognizes community participation through its personnel evaluation system, but to drive participation it relies primarily on the intrinsic benefits of community membership: the opportunities to solve problems, develop new ideas, and build relationships with peers who share a common passion.

Formal processes are not freed from the informal. Companies have done this using a range of approaches. They also develop personal relationships and established ways of interacting. Research has found that certain factors can indicate a higher level of collaboration in knowledge exchange in a business network. A CoP was created to bring together a diverse group of professionals from geographically-dispersed agencies to learn from each other, to capture best practices and to collaboratively address challenges. Results The search strategy identified 6,605 abstracts, of which 90 were potentially eligible for inclusion, based on the selection criteria.

The fact that clinicians relied on their CoPs to obtain information was a finding. The community must be inclusive of all involved in the enterprise and be welcoming to those at the periphery, who represent its future.
